How to clip a podcast: share a moment as a listener, or cut clips as the show

How to clip a podcast depends on who is asking. A listener can share a moment from Spotify, Apple Podcasts or YouTube using tools each company documents, checked on 9 October 2026. A show cutting its own clips for Shorts, Reels or TikTok needs a different process: moment, length, vertical frame, captions, schedule.

Short answer

As a listener, use the app's own tool: Spotify's scissors icon, Apple Podcasts' share-from-a-time option, or a YouTube clip of 5 to 60 seconds. Those make links, not video files. As the show, cut your own vertical clips: pick the moment, set the length, reframe, caption, schedule.

On 27 May 2026 Spotify announced a pair of scissors for its Now Playing screen.

Its newsroom post says a listener can now tap the scissor icon, trim the moment, and save or share it.

So "how to clip a podcast" has a two-tap answer now. Unless you run the podcast.

The search mixes two jobs. One is a listener who wants to send a friend the four minutes that made them laugh.

The other is a show that wants clips on Shorts, Reels and TikTok. Different tools, different output, different rules.

Here is the complication.

I went looking for Spotify's support page on clips on 9 October 2026 and could not find one. The Share from Spotify article, read that day, covers links, embed codes and Spotify codes. It does not mention clips at all.

So everything below comes from pages each company publishes, read on 9 October 2026, and nothing else.

Step 1: Clip a podcast on Spotify

Spotify's May post gives the steps. While listening, tap the scissor icon in Now Playing, trim the moment, then hit Save or Share.

The share menu changed with it. The same post lists four formats: the full episode, a chapter, a timestamp, or a clip.

Saved clips live in Your Library and can go into a podcast playlist.

Two limits, both from that post. It was rolling out to Free and Premium users on mobile, and it says availability is "expanding across more shows over time."

So if you do not see the scissors, the show may not have them yet. I do not know how many shows do. Spotify has not said.

Step 2: Clip a podcast on iPhone with Apple Podcasts

Apple calls it sharing from a time, and its iPhone User Guide page on sharing podcasts, read on 9 October 2026 for iOS 27, lays it out.

From the Now Playing screen, tap Share. Change From Start to From [time]. Send it.

The episode then starts wherever you were listening when you tapped Share.

There is a second route through transcripts. Apple's page on podcast transcripts says you can touch and hold a line and share from that point. It also warns that transcript availability varies by language and region.

On a Mac it is tighter. Apple's Mac guide says to select up to 200 words of the transcript, Control-click, and choose Share from [timestamp].

Step 3: Clip a podcast on YouTube

Plenty of shows publish full episodes to YouTube, so this is where many listeners clip.

YouTube's Clips help page, read on 9 October 2026, says clips run 5 to 60 seconds and play on a loop from the original video's watch page. In the app you slide the row of buttons under Subscribe, tap Clip, drag the slider, then share.

Not every video can be clipped. The same page says clipping is on by default but a creator can switch it off, and that live streams without DVR cannot be clipped.

Clips are public. Anyone who can watch the original can watch the clip, and the clip disappears if the original goes private or is deleted.

For a longer moment, YouTube's share help page has a Start at box under Share. Type the time, copy the link.

Step 4: Know what a listener clip is, and is not

A share link is not a clip.

Every tool above makes a pointer back into the app that owns the episode. None of them, on the pages I read, hands you a video file or an audio file you can upload somewhere else.

That is the right design for a listener. It is useless for a show that wants a Reel.

And if you were hoping to rip someone else's audio and post it, that stops being a how-to question. We covered where that line sits in who owns a podcast clip.

One note for show owners before the next part.

Because YouTube switches clipping on by default, listeners can already be clipping your episodes. Check Clips in YouTube Studio to see who made what. Then decide whether to leave the setting on.

Step 5: As the show, pick the moment first

Now the other job. You own the recording and you want clips that stand alone in a feed.

Start with selection, because it decides more than the edit. Watch the episode once at normal speed and mark where you reacted, not where the topic changed. The full method is in how to choose which moments from an episode to clip.

VALORAE Arc has delivered 500+ videos for podcasts and founders, and we still pick on reactions rather than topics. The moment you reacted to is a better bet than the one that seemed important.

Step 6: Let the idea set the length

YouTube's listener clip tops out at 60 seconds. Your own clip is not bound by that, and it should not chase it either.

Cut where the thought starts and stop where it lands.

Most spoken moments fit well under a minute. Some need longer. We set out the reasoning in how long a podcast clip should be.

Step 7: Reframe for vertical, then caption

A horizontal two-shot cropped to the centre looks like a leftover. Cut between single-speaker frames on the exchange instead, which is covered in turning a horizontal podcast into vertical video.

Then caption, because auto captions trip on names, jargon and numbers, and a podcast is full of all three. Correct them by hand before anything posts. Placement and styling are in captions for short-form.

This is the step that answers "how to clip podcasts for TikTok" too. A native vertical file with burned-in, corrected captions is what every short-form feed expects. This post does not cover TikTok's in-app tools, so check TikTok's own help pages before you rely on one.

Step 8: Run it as a sequence, not a one-off

One clip is an afternoon. A clip every week is a process, and it breaks at the handoff between whoever chose the moment and whoever edits it, because the reason for the choice never gets written down.

The full sequence, from recording with clipping in mind through to scheduling and review, is in the workflow for turning one episode into a month of short-form.

If you would rather hire it out than run it, the person you want is a clip editor working for the show. VALORAE Cast wrote up what that job looks like from the editor's side in podcast clip editor jobs, which is worth reading before you post the brief.

Most of this post is about tools we do not sell. That is fine. Plenty of people typing this question want the two-tap answer, and VALORAE Arc would rather they get a sourced one than a guess.

If you are weighing software for this, OpusClip alternatives for a podcast lists what each tool's pricing page says.

The short version

  • Use Spotify's scissor icon in Now Playing to clip a moment, if your show has it yet.
  • Share from a time in Apple Podcasts on iPhone by switching From Start to From [time].
  • Make a YouTube clip of 5 to 60 seconds, or use Start at for anything longer.
  • Treat every listener clip as a link, never as a file you can repost.
  • Check Clips in YouTube Studio if you own the show, because clipping is on by default.
  • Cut your own clips in order: moment, length, vertical frame, corrected captions, schedule.

If you want the show side done for you, that is what we do at valoraearc.com.

Frequently asked questions

How to clip a podcast?

It depends on whether you are listening or publishing. A listener uses the app's own share tool, which makes a link to a moment inside the episode. A show that wants clips for Shorts, Reels or TikTok cuts its own vertical video files from the recording: pick the moment, set the length, reframe to 9:16, caption it, then schedule it.

How to clip a podcast on Spotify?

Spotify's newsroom post of 27 May 2026 says to tap the scissor icon in the Now Playing view, trim the moment, then save or share it. The same post says the feature was rolling out on mobile to Free and Premium users and is available on a growing number of shows, so some episodes will not show the icon yet.

How to clip a podcast on iPhone?

In Apple Podcasts, Apple's iPhone User Guide says to tap Share from the Now Playing screen, change From Start to From [time], and send it. The episode then opens at the point you were listening. From a transcript you can also touch and hold text and share from that point. If the show is on YouTube, the YouTube app's Clip button makes a 5 to 60 second clip.

How to clip part of a podcast?

Share it from a time. Apple Podcasts lets you share an episode from the point you are at, Spotify's share menu offers a timestamp, chapter or clip, and YouTube's share panel has a Start at box. All three send a link that opens at that moment, which is usually what the person receiving it wants.

How to clip podcast audio?

None of the listener tools checked on 9 October 2026 gives you an audio file; they all make links that play inside the app. If you own the show, export the segment from your own recording in your editor. If you do not own it, cutting and reposting the audio is a rights question, not a technical one.

How to clip podcasts for TikTok?

Cut a vertical video file from an episode you own or have permission to use, caption it, and upload it natively. A share link from Spotify, Apple Podcasts or YouTube is not a video you can post. This post makes no claim about TikTok's in-app tools or limits.
